From local amateur fields to captaining a professional football club
In short: Ben Cabango's rise in Welsh football illustrates a steady ascent through the ranks of elite sport. From playing for an amateur side where his father coached, he navigated the academy system to become a mainstay defender and eventually the captain of Swansea City.
Growing up within local community sports, Ben Cabango was raised in Cardiff by parents from Angola and Wales. He began as a youth player for Maindy Corries, an amateur side where his father, Paolo, served as a coach. This foundation preceded his move into formal academy structures, starting at Newport County between the ages of 13 and 15 before he joined Swansea City at age 14.
His progression through the Swansea City ranks was marked by leadership and early success. He captained the under-19 side to an FAW Welsh Youth Cup victory in 2018, a pivotal year that also saw him sign his first professional deal. During this period, he gained vital senior experience on loan at The New Saints, where he made his debut in a UEFA Champions League qualifying match against KF Shkëndija and scored his first senior goal.
Cabango established himself as a regular starter for Swansea City following the departure of Joe Rodon, featuring in 34 games during a season that included an EFL Championship play-off run. He proved vital during regional contests; he helped Swansea secure both South Wales Derbies in one league year, notably netting a 99th-minute goal to beat Cardiff City.
His domestic success translated to international recognition as well. He made his senior debut for the Wales national team in September 2020 and was subsequently selected for major tournaments, including the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In January 2025, following the departure of Matt Grimes, Cabango was officially named club captain of Swansea City.
