How a new faction emerged from a split in Indian politics
In short: In 2021, a major shift occurred within the Lok Janshakti Party. Following a decision by the Election Commission of India to freeze the original party's symbol, a new faction, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), was formed under the leadership of Chirag Paswan.
The emergence of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), or LJP(RV), represents a significant schism in Indian political structures. Formed in 2021, the party was established under the leadership of Chirag Paswan after the Election Commission of India froze the symbol of the original Lok Janshakti Party. This administrative action necessitated the allotment of a new name and symbol to both competing factions, resulting in two distinct entities: the LJP(RV) and the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party. This split occurred after the electoral body intervened regarding the former party's emblem. Consequently, the political landscape now features two separate organisations.
The party's electoral performance varies significantly depending on the political landscape and alliances. When contesting as part of the National Democratic Alliance, the LJP(RV) fielded 29 candidates and achieved an overall vote share of 4.97%, winning 19 of those contested seats. In contrast, its performance in the Chatra Assembly constituency was more limited; contesting as a single candidate within the same alliance, it won its only seat but secured an overall vote share of just 0.61%. The group's success rate in certain contests remains notable. For instance, they secured a single victory in the Chatra constituency.
In Nagaland, the party has achieved 'state party' status, securing approximately 8.65% of the total votes. Its presence in the region is marked by contesting 15 seats, which resulted in two victories in Pughoboto and Tobu, while eight other candidates finished in second place. This fragmentation highlights the complex nature of factionalism and symbol allotment within the Indian electoral system. During elections in Nagaland, the group contested fifteen different positions. Their efforts yielded two successful wins in Pughoboto and Tobu.
