The political evolution of the Rasht/ya Lok Dal
In short: Emerging from a 1996 split within the Janata Dal, this Indian regional party has navigated a complex political journey. From its origins under Chaudhary Ajit Singh to shifting through various coalitions, the group has moved from the Congress and United Progressive Alliance to its recent partnership with the BJP.
The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), which translates to the 'National People's Party', was established by Chaudhary Ajit Singh in 1996. Singh, the son of former Indian Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, originally emerged as a breakaway faction of the Janata Dal. His political trajectory was marked by significant shifts; after being re-elected as a Congress candidate in 1996, he resigned from the party and the Lok Sabha to found the Bharatiya Kisan Kamgar Party, eventually winning a by-election in Baghpat in 1997.
By 1999, Singh had relaunched the party under its current name, the Rashtriya Lok Dal. The party's history is defined by its participation in various governing coalitions. Between 2001 and 2003, Singh served as the Minister of Agriculture in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Later, after the RLD joined the United Progressive Alliance in 2011, Singh held the position of Minister of Civil Aviation from December 2011 until May 2014.
The party's electoral fortunes have fluctuated significantly. Following a period of decline between 2014 and 2022, where it lost traditional seats, the RLD saw a resurgence in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. Contesting in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, the RLD won nine of the 33 seats it contested. Most recently, in the 2024 Indian general election, the party joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, successfully winning both seats it contested: Bijnor and Baghpat.
