The Lucayan Archipelago: A vast, submerged limestone chain with a tragic, forgotten history
In short: Spanning over 1,000 kilometers from Florida to Hispaniola, the Lucayan Archipelago is a sprawling collection of hundreds of islands and thousands of cays. While today it hosts the sovereign Bahamas and the British territory of Turks and Caicos, its name honors the indigenous people who vanished centuries ago.
The archipelago is a massive geological formation, consisting of roughly 740 islands and 2,400 cays resting upon two large limestone and coral platforms. Geographically, it extends from the southeast of the United States toward northern Hispaniola, sitting north of Cuba. The terrain is notably low-lying, with Mount Alvernia on Cat Island serving as the highest point at just 63 meters above sea level. Beyond the visible land, the chain continues underwater through the submerged Mouchoir, Silver, and Navidad Banks.
The islands were originally settled by the Lucayans, a branch of the Taíno people, between the 8th and 16th centuries. These inhabitants maintained a sophisticated society with their own language, governance, and trade networks utilizing dug-out canoes. Their history took a catastrophic turn in October 1492, when they became the first indigenous Americans encountered by Christopher Columbus. Following this contact, Spanish forces began enslaving the population, resulting in the total eradication of the Lucayan people from parts of the archipelago by 1520.
Today, the region is defined by a tropical climate marked by high humidity and frequent hurricanes that physically reshape the landscape. While only 38 of the thousands of islands and cays are inhabited, they support a vibrant marine and terrestrial ecosystem. The waters are home to humpback whales and various dolphin species, while the coastal caves provide habitats for bats, lizards, and frogs. The archipelago remains a complex intersection of natural beauty and a somber, erased human legacy.
