The Mafia video game series blends historical realism with the grit of organized crime
In short: Spanning decades of 20th-century history, the Mafia series invites players into the shoes of criminals navigating fictionalized American cities. From the Great Depression to the 1960s, these games prioritize complex narratives and realistic urban simulation, challenging players to rise through the ranks of the underworld or dismantle it entirely.
The franchise began in 2002 with the release of Mafia, a title set in the 1930s city of Lost Heaven. Developed by Illusion Softworks, the game established a template for the series: an open-world environment that emphasizes narrative depth and realistic traffic enforcement. Players who ignore speed limits or drive recklessly face escalating police intervention, a mechanic designed to simulate a functioning urban atmosphere. This focus on realism has been a hallmark of the series, though it has occasionally sparked controversy. Upon the release of Mafia II, for instance, European Parliament member Sonia Alfano called for a ban, arguing the game glorified the criminal organizations that had devastated families like her own.
The series evolved significantly with Mafia III, released in 2016 by Hangar 13. Set in 1968 New Bordeaux, a fictionalized New Orleans, the game follows Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran seeking revenge against the mob. While the series has achieved commercial success with over 34 million copies sold, critical reception has varied. The first two installments were generally praised for their storytelling, but Mafia III faced criticism for technical issues and a repetitive gameplay structure. Despite these challenges, the franchise remains a significant cultural touchstone, even once holding the world record for the most profanity in a video game before being surpassed by Grand Theft Auto V in 2013.
Looking ahead, the series is expanding its scope beyond the American landscape. The upcoming Mafia: The Old Country, announced for 2025, serves as a prequel set in 1900s Sicily. This installment explores the origins of the Mafia, following protagonist Enzo Favara as he joins the Torrisi crime family to escape indentured labor in sulfur mines. By shifting the setting to the Italian valley, the developers aim to provide a new perspective on the organization's roots while maintaining the series' signature blend of linear storytelling and open-world exploration.
