In short: Marrakesh Menara Airport has transformed from a strategic US military outpost during World War II into a massive international terminal. Today, it connects the Marrakesh-Safi region to Europe, the Arab world, and even North America, managing a complex flow of global passengers and heavy jetliners.

The airport's origins as a logistics node date back to World War II, when it served as a vital hub for the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command. During this period, the facility acted as a critical stopover on the Cairo-Dakar transport route, facilitating the movement of personnel, cargo, and transiting aircraft between locations such as Agadir Airport and Casablanca Airfield. The facility is equipped with several radio navigation aids, including VOR, DME, and NDB. It also utilizes an ILS Cat II landing system to assist with arrivals.

A significant modern era for the airport began in August 1991, following an US$8 million investment dedicated to refurbishing buildings and extending the runway. This expansion helped prepare the facility for its current role as a major international gateway. The airport's infrastructure is substantial, featuring a paved runway measuring 3,100 by 45 metres, capable of accommodating modern jetliners up to the size of a Boeing 747. The airport's parking area spans 125,000 square metres, providing enough space for up to fourteen Boeing 737s and four Boeing 747s. This infrastructure supports the airport's diverse international traffic.

The airport's capacity and scale have grown alongside global travel demands. While the existing T1/T2 terminals cover 42,000 m2 and were designed with a capacity of nine million passengers per year, the airport reached a significant milestone in 2019 by serving over 6.3 million passengers. The facility also offers specialized services, being one of only six Moroccan airports to provide the ONDA 'Salon Convives de Marque' VIP service. As of 2024, the airport's reach has expanded further to include flights from North America. The airport's layout includes a separate freight terminal with 340 m2 of covered space. Additionally, a third terminal has been constructed to complement the existing T1/T2 structure.
