How a small pearling port transformed into a global financial powerhouse in the Gulf
In short: Manama began as a modest trading outpost, defined by the seasonal rhythm of pearl diving and ancient maritime routes. Today, it stands as a modern financial hub, having navigated centuries of colonial influence, the discovery of oil, and a dramatic shift from traditional dhows to a globalized, high-tech economy.
Manama’s history is a tapestry of shifting regional powers. First appearing in Islamic texts around 1345 AD, the city served as a vital port, though it was long overshadowed by the defensive prominence of nearby Muharraq. Throughout the centuries, it fell under the control of the Portuguese in 1521 and the Safavid Persians in 1602. It was not until the Al Khalifa dynasty took control in 1783 that the foundations for the modern state were laid, eventually leading to Manama’s designation as the capital upon Bahrain’s independence in 1971.
The city’s economic trajectory was fundamentally altered by the 1932 discovery of oil, which ended a long reliance on the pearling industry. Before this, Manama’s economy was tied to the sea; in 1907, nearly 1,000 boats supported 18,000 people. The collapse of the pearling market in the late 1920s, exacerbated by the introduction of Japanese cultured pearls, forced a rapid pivot. By the 1990s, a concerted diversification strategy transformed the city into a regional financial center, hosting over 200 financial institutions and banks in its central business districts.
Modern Manama is a product of rapid urban expansion and land reclamation. As the city grew, it swallowed surrounding villages and extended its coastline into the desert. This development was mirrored by a massive expansion of infrastructure, including the 1986 completion of the causeway to Saudi Arabia and the modernization of port facilities like Mina Salman. Today, the city reflects a cosmopolitan character, with a population that has been shaped by centuries of migration, trade, and the complex geopolitical currents of the Persian Gulf.
