Manitoulin Island is the world's largest freshwater island, hiding lakes within its own lakes.
In short: Spanning 2,766 square kilometers in Lake Huron, Manitoulin Island is a geological marvel and a cultural sanctuary. It is the largest freshwater island on Earth, containing over 100 internal lakes—some of which host their own islands. Known as the Spirit Island, it remains a profound site of Indigenous history and resilience.
Physiographically, Manitoulin Island is an eastward extension of the Interior Plains, characterized by dolomite rock formations that connect it to the Niagara Escarpment. This unique geology creates an alkaline soil that prevents the growth of common Northern Ontario flora like blueberries, favoring instead the hawberry. This fruit is so iconic to the local identity that residents are affectionately called Haweaters, a name celebrated annually at the Haweater Festival.
The island's human history is deep and contested. Archaeological findings at Sheguiandah suggest human presence dating back at least 10,000 years, with some estimates reaching 30,000 years ago. By the mid-17th century, the Beaver Wars forced the Anishinaabe people to flee, leaving the island largely uninhabited for 150 years. Following the War of 1812, Indigenous populations returned, leading to a series of treaties with the British Crown. The 1862 treaty, which opened the land to non-Native settlement, remains a point of contention, as the Wiikwemkoong First Nation maintains they never accepted its terms.
Today, the island serves as a complex ecosystem and a cultural hub. It hosts 108 freshwater lakes, including Lake Manitou, the largest lake on a freshwater island in the world. The island's waters are a focus of ongoing conservation efforts, such as those by the Manitoulin Streams Improvement Association, which has worked since 2000 to rehabilitate local rivers. With a permanent population of 12,600 that swells during the summer, the island remains a vital, living landscape where the Anishinaabe people—the People of the Three Fires—continue to steward their ancestral territory.
