In short: Situated 1,700 miles south of Hawaii, Malden Island is a desolate coral atoll in the central Pacific. Though it lacks a permanent human population, this tiny, 11-square-mile landmass holds a complex history of ancient stone platforms, 20th-century guano mining, and the testing of British nuclear weapons.

Malden Island is a low-lying coral atoll located in the central and southern Line Islands, forming part of the Republic of Kiribati. Unlike the more populated islands in the Gilbert group, Malden remains uninhabited. Its geography is defined by a large, salty lagoon enclosed by land, with underground channels connecting it to the surrounding Pacific Ocean. The island’s terrain is notably flat, with a total land area of approximately 11 square miles.

The island’s history is marked by distinct eras of human activity. Ancient stone platforms and graves suggest early human presence, though the island is now best known for its industrial and military legacy. From the early 20th century, the island was exploited for its phosphate-rich guano deposits. Later, in 1957, it served as the site for the first British hydrogen bomb tests, known as Operation Grapple. These activities left behind a landscape that is now primarily a wildlife sanctuary, protected by a 12-nautical-mile fishing exclusion zone established by the Kiribati government in 2014.

Today, Malden Island serves as a critical habitat for seabirds, including various species of boobies, tropicbirds, and frigatebirds. Its isolation and arid climate have limited its vegetation to hardy scrub and grasses, as introduced coconut palms from the mining era largely failed to thrive. While feral cats and house mice persist as remnants of past human occupation, the island remains a quiet, protected outpost in the vast expanse of the central Pacific, far removed from the urban centers of South Tarawa.
