In short: Before he became a defining voice in video game storytelling, Marc Laidlaw was a horror novelist. Joining Valve in 1997, he sought to move beyond simple mechanics, embedding narrative directly into the environment. His departure in 2016 marked a shift, leaving behind a legacy of architectural storytelling and unresolved plots.

Marc Laidlaw began his career as a novelist, publishing works like The 37th Mandala, which won an International Horror Guild Award in 1996. His transition to the gaming industry was sparked by a failed novelization of the game Gadget. In July 1997, he joined Valve, where he contributed to the Half-Life series. Laidlaw viewed his role as introducing traditional storytelling techniques to game design, famously arguing that narrative should be baked into the architecture of the game's corridors rather than dictated through cutscenes.

During his tenure at Valve, Laidlaw focused on characterization, introducing family dynamics to the Half-Life 2 series in 2004. He worked on subsequent episodes, including the unreleased Episode Three, which he had intended to serve as the conclusion to the story arc. His creative philosophy was rooted in improvisation and collaboration, often drawing inspiration from the team's experimental designs. However, he expressed frustration with the limitations of the first-person shooter genre, noting that he hoped for a more expansive vocabulary for storytelling that went beyond shooting or pushing buttons.

Following his departure from Valve in 2016, Laidlaw returned to prose writing, though he faced challenges in the publishing industry. In 2017, he published a short story titled Epistle 3, which many fans interpreted as a summary of the cancelled Half-Life 2: Episode Three. Laidlaw later expressed regret over the publication, feeling it had created unnecessary difficulties for his former colleagues. Today, he remains distanced from the Half-Life universe, having declined to play the 2020 release Half-Life: Alyx, while continuing his creative pursuits in music and literature.
