In short: In the 2022 Tamil-language film Mahaan, a man's pursuit of wealth leads to a violent collision with his own legacy. What begins as a simple career shift transforms into a sprawling gangster saga involving a liquor mafia, political blackmail, and a son's quest for retribution.

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film follows the life of Gandhi Mahaan, a character whose journey spans several decades. The narrative begins in 1968, where a young Gandhi is a gambling prodigy. By 1996, he has become a commerce teacher at a local government school. However, a chance encounter with a beggar named Manickam—who suggests that most people live by morals while a tiny 5% live without them—sets the stage for Gandhi's transformation. His transformation is sparked when he meets Rocky, a former student who assists him in achieving his ambitions. This shift occurs after he abandons his family and violates certain Gandhian principles.

Driven by a desire to fulfill his dreams, Gandhi enters the liquor trade alongside his childhood friend Sathya and an old student named Rocky. By 1998, they are building a syndicate to dominate the Tamil Nadu market with their brand, Sooraa. The business grows into a massive empire by 2008, making Gandhi a billionaire who controls several distilleries. This success, however, brings him into direct conflict with the law and his own family. The group faces significant opposition from a rival member, leading to violent confrontations. Their growing influence eventually attracts scrutiny from the CBI, who seek evidence for an arrest.

The film's tension culminates in a generational clash. Gandhi's son, Dada, becomes an officer in the Special Task Force with the specific mission to dismantle the very liquor mafia his father built. This creates a tragic cycle of violence where the lines between family, business ethics, and political corruption are blurred. Ultimately, Gandhi's journey concludes with him dismantling his own empire to find a sense of balance and true freedom. The conflict intensifies when Gnanam, who has risen to become Deputy CM, attempts to use Gandhi's son to settle old scores. This high-stakes game of vengeance forces Gandhi to make a final, drastic decision regarding his vast wealth and business assets.
