In short: In the early hours of 20 August 1989, a birthday celebration on the River Thames turned into a catastrophe. A massive dredger collided with the pleasure boat Marchioness, causing the smaller vessel to sink in just thirty seconds. This disaster exposed fatal flaws in river safety and sparked a long battle for justice.

The collision occurred at approximately 1:46 am between Cannon Street and Southwark Bridges. The Bowbelle, a large aggregate dredger, struck the Marchioness twice. The first impact turned the smaller vessel to port, while the second caused it to pivot and capsize. Within thirty seconds, the Marchioness was pushed under the Bowbelle's bow and sank stern first.

The disaster claimed 51 lives out of approximately 130 people on board. Survival was heavily dictated by location; while 78% of those in the wheelhouse survived, only 31% of those in the lower saloon made it out. The speed of the sinking meant passengers struggled to access life rafts or lifebuoys. The vessel's design contributed to the tragedy, as a rebuilt upper saloon had obstructed the view from the wheelhouse and there was a lack of easily accessible emergency exits from the lower decks.

Investigations revealed systemic failures. A 2000 inquiry concluded that poor lookout on both vessels was the primary cause. On the Bowbelle, the captain's vision was limited by the ship's trim and dredging equipment. Furthermore, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch faced criticism for relying on police interviews rather than interviewing those on board. While the collision led to increased safety measures and four new lifeboat stations on the Thames, legal accountability remained elusive; criminal charges against the Bowbelle's captain and directors of its owners were either dismissed or ended in hung juries.
