In short: Two years after the Titanic, the Empress of Ireland sank in the Saint Lawrence River with terrifying speed. Despite carrying enough lifeboats for everyone on board, the ship vanished in just fourteen minutes, leaving 1,012 people dead. It remains the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history.

Built at Govan on the Clyde, the Empress of Ireland was a twin-screw liner designed by Francis Elgar for the Canadian Pacific Steamships. Launched in 1906, she was a sophisticated vessel featuring ten watertight bulkheads and a capacity for over 1,500 passengers. Following the Titanic disaster, her safety equipment was upgraded; by 1914, she carried sixteen steel lifeboats and twenty-six collapsible wooden ones, providing space for 1,686 people—well above her licensed capacity.

The disaster occurred in the early hours of 29 May 1914. While en route to Liverpool, the liner encountered thick fog near the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River and collided with the Norwegian collier Storstad. The impact created a massive hole, allowing 60,000 imperial gallons of water per second to flood the ship. Unlike the Titanic, where watertight doors could be closed from the bridge, the Empress of Ireland required manual closure, which proved impossible given the suddenness of the event.

The ship lurched violently to starboard, preventing the launch of port-side lifeboats. Within minutes, the vessel rolled onto her side, plunging hundreds into the near-freezing water. Of the 1,477 people on board, only 465 survived. The subsequent Commission of Inquiry, led by Lord Mersey, investigated twenty specific questions regarding the conduct of the crews and the visibility conditions. The wreck now rests in 22 fathoms of water, protected by Canadian legislation as a site of historical significance.
