The favorite daughter who defied imperial marriage politics
In short: In the rigid hierarchy of the Habsburg court, one Archduchess broke the rules. While her siblings were married off for political gain, Maria Christina secured a marriage of her own choosing, fueled by a legendary bond with her mother, Empress Maria Theresa.
Born in Vienna on 13 May 1742, Maria Christina was the fifth child of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I. As the Empress's favorite, she enjoyed a privileged position that sparked intense resentment among her siblings. This favoritism was not merely emotional; Maria Theresa frequently used her daughter to exert influence over other family members, a tactic that deepened the rift between Maria Christina and her brothers and sisters.
Her personal life was marked by profound connections and political maneuvering. She shared a deep, intense love affair with Princess Isabella of Parma, a relationship so close they were compared to Orpheus and Eurydice. While her mother initially blocked a romance with the Duke of Württemberg due to his rank, the sudden death of Emperor Francis I in August 1765 cleared the path for Maria Christina to marry Prince Albert of Saxony. This was the only marriage among Maria Theresa's daughters not dictated by political necessity.
The couple's life was one of cultural splendor and administrative struggle. As joint governors of the Austrian Netherlands from 1781 to 1789, they hosted a luxurious court, yet they were often reduced to symbolic figureheads by Emperor Joseph II, who restricted their political power and income. Despite these limitations, they used their time to amass the significant drawings and engravings that would form the foundation of the famed Albertina Art Collection. Their lives, moving between Pressburg, Vienna, and Brussels, reflected the shifting tensions of the late 18th-century Habsburg Empire.
