From Curitiba to the International Emmy stage
In short: Marjorie Estiano’s rise from a regional theater student to an International Emmy Award winner illustrates the power of artistic migration in Brazil. By moving between cities and mediums, she transformed from a teen soap opera star into a multi-platinum recording artist and critically acclaimed dramatic actress.
Born in Curitiba, Paraná, Marjorie Estiano began her journey by studying Scenic Arts at the Escola Estadual do Paraná. Seeking to refine her craft, she relocated to São Paulo, where she spent two years studying music at the Faculdade Paulista de Artes. This period of academic and artistic transition was foundational, allowing her to balance theater work with commercial appearances before moving again to Rio de Janeiro.
In Rio, Estiano entered the TV Globo Actor's Workshop, a pivotal gateway into Brazilian mainstream media. The character 'Natasha' was awarded to her as a primary villain in 2004, during her time on the youth drama Malhação. Her success in television was bolstered by her musical output; after recording demo tapes with Victor Pozas and Alexandre Castilho, she signed with Universal Music. Her debut album went platinum with sales of 150 thousand copies, driven by the hit single "Você Sempre Será."
Estiano's career is defined by high-stakes dramatic roles in prime-time telenovelas such as Duas Caras and Império. In 2014, her performance in Império was recognized as part of a production that won the best telenovela at the 2015 Emmy International. She eventually reached a pinnacle of critical acclaim with the series Sob Pressão (2017–2021), where she played Dr. Carolina, earning an International Emmy Award for Best Actress.
Her versatility is further evidenced by her work in cinema and theater, including lead roles in Time and the Wind and Good Manners. Whether navigating the complex family histories of Erico Verissimo's novels or portraying a filmmaker in Chico Buarque-inspired series, Estiano has maintained a career that bridges the gap between popular commercial success and prestigious artistic recognition.
