In short: Once a quiet agricultural settlement established in 1904, McAllen has transformed into a vital economic engine. Situated on the Mexican border, this Texas hub drives a massive binational metropolitan area of over 1.5 million people through trade, tourism, and manufacturing.

McAllen's evolution began with the arrival of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1904. To ensure the tracks crossed their land, John and James McAllen donated property, leading to the formation of the McAllen Townsite Company. By 1911, the area was already a thriving agricultural community, with 5,000 acres under cultivation producing crops like cotton, citrus, and figs.

The 20th century brought rapid shifts. Following an economic boom that saw the population rise from 1,200 in 1916 to 6,000 by 1920, the city became a hub for petroleum and farming. The 1947 discovery of oil in the nearby Reynosa area triggered a significant migration from the Mexican interior, providing both a new tourist market and a steady labor supply.

Today, the city is a cornerstone of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area, which holds 921,549 residents as of 2025. The economy is deeply integrated with Mexico via the maquiladora system, where components are shipped to Mexico for assembly and then returned to the U.S. as finished goods. This cross-border synergy makes the binational Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan area home to more than 1.5 million people.

Despite its nickname, 'The City of Palms,' the local landscape is dominated by subtropical vegetation like honey mesquite and cedar elm. The climate is characterized by intense heat, with temperatures frequently exceeding 90 °F from May through September, and heat indices that can reach over 110 °F.
