How a 1945 Vancouver startup became a global consulting titan
In short: What began as a small Canadian firm founded by William Manson Mercer has evolved into a massive engine of global finance. Today, this New York-headquartered subsidiary of Marsh McLennan oversees trillions of dollars in assets, navigating a complex history of aggressive acquisitions and corporate restructuring.
The origins of Mercer trace back to 1945, when William Manson Mercer established William M. Mercer, Limited in Vancouver, Canada. By 1959, the firm had been absorbed into the employee benefits department of Marsh McLennan. Over the following decades, the company underwent significant structural shifts, including the 1975 creation of the wholly owned subsidiary William M. Mercer, Inc. and the 1992 formation of the Mercer Consulting Group, which housed various specialized units like National Economic Research Associates, Inc. and Mercer Management Consulting.
The firm's growth has been defined by a relentless acquisition strategy. Notable milestones include the 2000 purchase of Delta Consulting Group, which brought expertise in organizational development from theorist David A. Nadler. Later, in 2007, several specialty units were merged into the management consultancy Oliver Wyman. More recently, the company's expansion has been prolific; as of 2025, Mercer had completed 104 acquisitions since 2016, including the purchase of O’Brien Wealth Partners, a firm managing $1.1 billion in assets.
Beyond its organizational evolution, Mercer holds a massive footprint in the global financial landscape. It stands as the world's largest investment advisory, managing over US$300 billion in outsourced assets and overseeing a staggering US$16 trillion under advisement. While primarily focused on human resources and financial services, the firm's history also includes periods of controversy, such as the 2004 revelation regarding inaccuracies in a compensation report for the NYSE, which contributed to a $13$9.5 million pay package for Chairman Richard Grasso.
