The Pennsylvania county where water occupies just 1.5% of the land
In short: In a landscape defined by rolling hills and heavy industry, Mercer County’s geography is dominated by earth rather than water. While it features prominent lakes and rivers, these waterways represent a tiny fraction of its total area, highlighting a terrain shaped more by the Allegheny Plateau than by maritime influence.
Located in northwestern Pennsylvania midway between Erie and Pittsburgh, Mercer County was established in 1800 and named for Hugh Mercer, an American Revolution general. The county's physical geography is characterized by the rolling hills of the Allegheny Plateau. Despite housing major sites such as the Shenango River Lake, where the Army Corps of Engineers manages boating and camping areas, very little of the county's area is actually water. The region serves as a key component of the Hermitage, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area within the Greater Pittsburgh area. It also falls under the jurisdiction of the Appalachian Regional Commission.
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, Mercer County encompasses a total area of 683 square miles. Of this territory, 673 square miles are land, leaving only 10 square miles (approximately 1.5%) as water. The primary waterways that define the region's geography include the Shenango and Little Shenango rivers, along with Lake Wilhelm, which is situated within Maurice K. Goddard State Park. Sharon experiences a humid continental climate, where July highs reach roughly 72.2 °F and January lows hit around 27.1 °F. These figures reflect the seasonal variability of the Allegheny Plateau.
The county's identity has historically been tied to its industrial and agricultural output rather than its aquatic features. Its economy was built on heavy industry, bituminous coal mining, and agriculture—specifically dairy, hay, and oats. This inland focus is further reflected in its demographics; as of the 2020 census, over half of the population (52.1%) lives in urban areas, while nearly half live in rural settings across this land-heavy landscape. The local population is characterized by a median age of 45.1 years as of 2020. Furthermore, about 31.7% of all households in the county consist of individuals living alone.
