In short: Mexico Beach, a quiet coastal community on the Florida Panhandle, was nearly erased from the map in 2018. When Hurricane Michael struck with 160 mph winds, federal officials declared the town wiped out. Yet, through resilience and reconstruction, this small city has rebuilt its infrastructure and returned to life.

Founded in 1946 and incorporated in 1967, Mexico Beach long defined the quintessential old Florida aesthetic. Before the 2018 storm, the town was a collection of vacation homes on stilts and 50-year-old bungalows nestled along white sand beaches. Its geography is compact, covering just 1.8 square miles on the southernmost tip of Bay County, yet it maintains a distinct identity, even utilizing schools in neighboring Gulf County rather than its own district.

The community's vulnerability to extreme weather is a recurring theme in its history. In 1985, Hurricane Kate caused significant destruction to beachfront property with Category 2 winds. However, the impact of Hurricane Michael on October 10, 2018, was unprecedented. Making landfall as a Category 5 storm—the first to hit the United States since 1992—it brought 160 mph sustained winds that leveled nearly every home in the city. FEMA administrator Brock Long famously labeled the area ground zero, as the storm destroyed the city hall, the elementary school, the water tower, and the local pier.

Despite the devastation, where roughly 285 residents reportedly chose to ride out the storm, the city has since undergone a significant recovery process. Supported by federal aid and local expenditures, Mexico Beach has rebuilt its essential infrastructure, including improved boat canals and new beachfront parks. While the population fluctuated from 1,072 in 2010 to 916 by the 2020 census, the broader county saw a rebound by 2024. Today, the city continues to market itself as the Gem of the Forgotten Coast, emphasizing its small-town charm and ongoing commitment to responsible development.
