In short: Michele Kang, a businesswoman who once knew nothing about football, has rapidly built a global multi-club empire. By applying rigorous corporate strategy to women's sports, she is reshaping the industry, from securing top-tier club promotions to funding massive research initiatives aimed at professionalizing the female athletic experience.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Michele Kang moved to the United States in 1980 to pursue education, eventually earning an MBA from the Yale School of Management. Her early career was defined by corporate leadership, including a tenure as a vice president at Northrop Grumman and the founding of the medical technology firm Cognosante in 2008. Kang’s entry into sports ownership was serendipitous; she only learned of the Washington Spirit after attending a 2019 celebration for the U.S. women's national team. By 2022, she had become the majority owner of the Spirit, marking her as the first woman of color to hold such a position in the NWSL.

In 2024, Kang launched Kynisca, a London-based umbrella group designed to manage her expanding portfolio of women's football clubs. This organization oversees the Washington Spirit, the French side OL Lyonnes, and the London City Lionesses. The Lionesses, which Kang acquired in 2023, achieved a historic milestone in May 2025 by securing promotion to the Women's Super League, becoming the first independent club—unaffiliated with a men's team—to compete in the top tier of English women's football.

Beyond club ownership, Kang is heavily invested in the science of female performance. She has pledged millions to U.S. Soccer and established the Kynisca Innovation Hub, which integrates into the Soccer Forward Foundation to study the specific needs of female athletes. Her influence extends to the men's game as well; in 2026, she became the sole majority owner of the French club Olympique Lyonnais after a period of significant financial instability within the Eagle Football Group. Through these efforts, Kang is attempting to professionalize the infrastructure surrounding women's sports, treating them not as a secondary concern, but as a primary business and research priority.
