How a Hollywood-backed soccer club became the world's most valuable women's team
In short: With a star-studded ownership group including Natalie Portman and Serena Williams, Angel City FC is more than a sports franchise. It is a financial powerhouse, leveraging massive sponsorship deals and celebrity influence to redefine the economic scale of professional women's soccer.
Since its formation was announced on July 21, 2020, Angel City FC has operated as a high-profile expansion franchise in the National Women's Soccer League. The club's ownership group is famously diverse, featuring a mix of Hollywood icons like America Ferrera and Eva Longoria, alongside sports legends such as Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach. In July 2024, the club's valuation reached $250 million following an investment by Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, making it the most valuable women's sports team globally.
The club's financial impact on the league is profound. In 2022, Angel City's revenue accounted for 38.75% of the NWSL's total annual revenue, and the club led the league in merchandise sales, generating $6 million. Their eight-figure sponsorship deal with DoorDash stands as the largest in NWSW history. Nevertheless, such swift expansion caused tension; a $200,000 penalty and a 3-point deduction were imposed on the club during October 2024 due to salary cap breaches.
On the pitch, the team's journey has been a rollercoaster of performance. After beginning play in the 2022 season, they achieved their first playoff berth in 2023 under interim coach Becki Tweed. The club's identity is deeply rooted in Los Angeles, from its 'asphalt' and 'armor' colors to a crest inspired by the Southern California red-tailed hawk and local palm trees. Even their kit designs, such as the 'Represent' jersey, incorporate imagery of the Los Angeles County coastline.
