In short: In 1900, France had fewer than 3,000 cars. To boost tyre sales, the Michelin brothers launched a free guide for motorists. It evolved from a manual for mechanics into an anonymous, star-studded arbiter of global fine dining, where a single rating can define a chef’s entire career.

The Michelin Guide began as a strategic marketing tool. Founders Édouard and André Michelin reasoned that if they provided drivers with maps, petrol station listings, and tyre repair instructions, they would encourage more travel and, consequently, more tyre wear. By 1922, the guide shifted from a free promotional item to a paid publication, as André Michelin realized that people only truly valued what they purchased. This era marked the transition toward the restaurant-focused authority we recognize today, complete with the iconic red cover introduced in 1931.

The famous star system, established in 1931, relies on a rigorous, secretive inspection process. Inspectors are instructed to maintain absolute anonymity, often keeping their profession hidden even from their own families. They evaluate restaurants based on ingredient quality, flavor consistency, and the chef's individual personality. While the guide maintains that starred establishments receive multiple visits annually, this process has faced scrutiny. In 2004, former inspector Pascal Rémy alleged that the actual number of inspectors was far lower than the company implied, leading to infrequent visits and potential favoritism toward legendary chefs.

Beyond the stars, the guide has expanded its reach through commercial partnerships with tourism boards, including deals in Thailand, Canada, and various U.S. cities. It has also diversified its criteria, introducing the Bib Gourmand for moderate pricing, Green Stars for sustainability, and, as of 2024, a hotel key system. Despite the shift toward digital apps and the cessation of most printed editions in 2021, the guide remains a cultural force. In France, the annual announcement of stars triggers a media frenzy comparable to the Academy Awards, cementing its status as the ultimate benchmark for culinary excellence.
