In short: Born in New York City and raised on the Upper East Side, Michael Rapaport has built a career spanning television, film, and podcasting. Now, the actor and comedian has set his sights on a new role: mayor of his hometown, with an official campaign announcement made in late 2025.

Michael Rapaport, born in 1970 to a radio personality mother and a radio executive father, grew up in Manhattan. His early life included an expulsion from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn before he eventually graduated from Martin Luther King High School in Manhattan. By 1989, at age 19, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue stand-up comedy, a path facilitated by his stepfather, Mark Lonow, who co-owned The Improv.

Rapaport eventually transitioned into acting, finding his first major opportunity on the television series China Beach. Over the following decades, he appeared in numerous films and television shows, including roles in True Romance, The War at Home, and Atypical. Beyond acting, he has directed documentaries, such as his 2011 project covering the history of the hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, and his 2014 ESPN film about the 1970s New York Knicks.

In recent years, Rapaport has become increasingly known for his vocal political advocacy, particularly regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict following the October 2023 Hamas-led attacks. He has traveled to Israel multiple times, spoken at rallies, and publicly criticized the entertainment industry's response to antisemitism. His outspoken nature has occasionally drawn controversy, including criticism for his comments toward other reality television contestants and his public praise for Rabbi Meir Kahane in 2025.

Looking toward the future, Rapaport has officially declared his intention to enter local politics. On December 31, 2025, he announced that he plans to run for mayor of New York City in 2029. This transition from a career in entertainment and sports media to municipal governance marks a significant shift for the New York-born performer.
