From Soviet childhood to global action icon: the multifaceted career of Milla Jovovich
In short: Born in Kyiv and raised in Los Angeles, Milla Jovovich evolved from a teenage model into a powerhouse of science fiction cinema. Beyond her record-breaking action franchises, she has navigated the worlds of experimental music, high fashion, and independent film, consistently using her commercial success to fund her artistic pursuits.
Born in 1975 in Kyiv, then part of the Soviet Union, Jovovich moved to London and eventually Los Angeles by age seven. Her mother, an actress, encouraged her early entry into the entertainment industry. By age nine, she began modeling, and by 1988, she had secured her first screen roles. Her early career was marked by both professional breakthroughs and personal challenges, including her parents' divorce and her father's 1994 imprisonment for health-insurance fraud.
Jovovich gained significant recognition in 1991 with the film Return to the Blue Lagoon, though she later took a hiatus to focus on music. She returned to prominence in 1997 as the lead in The Fifth Element, a role for which she mastered a fictional language. This success paved the way for her most iconic role as Alice in the Resident Evil franchise, which spanned from 2002 to 2016 and became the highest-grossing film series based on video games.
While her action roles provided financial stability, Jovovich maintained a parallel career in independent cinema and music. She released her first album in 1994, titled after Dante Alighieri’s epic poem, and later formed the experimental band Plastic Has Memory. Her modeling career remained equally prolific; she was named the world's highest-paid model by Forbes in 2004 and has served as a long-term international spokesmodel for L'Oréal since 1998. Throughout her career, she has balanced these diverse roles, viewing her commercial work as a means to maintain creative autonomy.
