From a nomadic Siberian camp to Hollywood stardom, the unconventional path of Pom Klementieff.
In short: Born in Quebec to a diplomat, Pom Klementieff navigated a childhood marked by profound loss and global travel. Before becoming a global action star, she honed her craft in French independent cinema, lived among reindeer herders in Siberia, and mastered martial arts, eventually securing her breakthrough role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Born on May 3, 1986, in Quebec City, Pom Klementieff’s early life was defined by the transient nature of her father’s diplomatic career. Her name, chosen by her parents, reflects the Korean words for spring and tiger. Following her father’s death when she was five and her mother’s struggle with schizophrenia, she was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt. The loss of her uncle on her 18th birthday and her brother seven years later shaped her resilient, independent spirit.
Klementieff’s professional trajectory is as varied as her upbringing. After briefly studying law in Paris, she pivoted to acting at the Cours Florent. Her early career included physically demanding roles, such as living in a remote Siberian camp for the 2009 film Loup. This experience, which involved working with wolves and reindeer in sub-zero temperatures, foreshadowed the intense physical preparation she would later bring to Hollywood. Her transition to American cinema began with the 2013 remake of Oldboy, where she showcased her boxing skills and contributed to her character's development.
Her rise to international prominence as Mantis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—spanning from 2017 to 2023—cemented her status as a versatile performer. Beyond acting, Klementieff is a dedicated martial artist with a purple belt in Taekwondo and an avid skydiver. Her commitment to her craft remains evident, whether she is performing her own stunts or learning English through American sitcoms. Despite her global reach, she remains a unique figure in the industry, having navigated personal tragedy and diverse cultural landscapes to define her own path.
