In short: As a special ward of Tokyo, Minato blends the city's historic commercial roots with its modern status as a wealthy, international hub. From the high-stakes boardrooms of global corporations to the quiet streets of exclusive residential districts, this ward serves as a central pillar of Japan's economic and cultural life.

Formed on March 15, 1947, through the merger of the Akasaka, Azabu, and Shiba wards, Minato occupies a unique position in the Tokyo Metropolis. Its name, which translates simply to harbor, was chosen after a brief consideration of other titles like Aoyama and Mita. Today, the ward is defined by a distinct geographical and cultural split between the Shitamachi—the original commercial center of Edo-Tokyo represented by the Shinbashi neighborhood—and the more affluent, representative Yamanote districts of Akasaka and Azabu.

The ward is a titan of industry, hosting the headquarters of major domestic corporations including Sony, Honda, Mitsubishi Motors, and SoftBank Group. This concentration of business power is matched by a high density of foreign embassies and multinational offices, making it one of the most international and wealthiest residential areas in Japan. As of September 1, 2025, the ward was home to 269,708 people living within its 20.37 square kilometers, a population that has recently begun to climb after years of decline.

Beyond its corporate skyline, Minato is a tapestry of Tokyo's history and modern entertainment. It houses the Atago Shrine, which marks the highest natural point in the 23 special wards, and the historic Zojoji temple in Shiba Park, located near the iconic Tokyo Tower. The ward also encompasses the artificial island of Odaiba and the vibrant nightlife of Roppongi. Politically, the area remains dynamic; in June 2024, Ai Seike made history by becoming the ward's first female mayor, ending the long tenure of Masaaki Takei.
