How a sprawling Japanese military hub transformed into a major Tokyo commuter city
In short: Sagamihara began as a collection of rural villages and an Imperial Army training site. Today, it stands as a massive, government-designated city of over 700,000 people. While it once thrived on local industrial manufacturing, it has increasingly evolved into a vital residential suburb for the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.
The modern city of Sagamihara occupies a vast area of northwestern Kanagawa Prefecture, stretching from the Tanzawa Mountains in the west to the bustling transit hubs of the Yokohama and Odakyu lines. Its origins are deeply tied to the 1930s, when the Imperial Japanese Army established extensive training facilities and arsenals in the region. This military presence served as a catalyst for consolidation, leading to the 1941 merger of several villages and Zama Town into Sagamihara Town, which was then the largest town in Japan by area.
Following the post-war era, the city experienced steady population growth, bolstered by its strategic transportation links to Yokohama, Hachioji, and Tokyo. By 2007, the population surpassed 700,000, and in 2010, the city achieved status as a government-designated ordinance city. This administrative shift resulted in the creation of three distinct wards: Midori-ku, Chuo-ku, and Minami-ku. The city’s governance is managed by a directly elected mayor and a 49-member unicameral council, reflecting its significant autonomy within the prefecture.
While Sagamihara was historically known for industries like machinery and metal production, the departure of large factories has shifted its character. It now functions primarily as a commuter hub, with nearly a quarter of its residents traveling to Tokyo for work or school as of 2015. Despite this suburban transition, the city maintains a unique identity, bridging the gap between the dense Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan core and the mountainous, rural landscapes of western Kanagawa.
