In short: Founded in 1816 by a French nobleman, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate are a Catholic congregation dedicated to serving the most marginalized populations. While they are celebrated for their global missionary work and commitment to social justice, their legacy is complicated by their historic role in Canadian residential schools.

The congregation began on January 25, 1816, in Aix-en-Provence, France, when Eugène de Mazenod and four companions united to preach to the poor in their local dialect. De Mazenod, who had fled the French Revolution as a child, sought to revitalize the Church by focusing on those he believed had been abandoned. By 1826, Pope Leo XII officially recognized the group as a religious congregation. Today, the order operates worldwide, maintaining a presence in diverse settings ranging from parishes and retreat centers to shrines dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Members of the order, known as Oblates, commit to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, as well as a vow of perseverance until death. Their formation is rigorous, involving years of discernment, postulant life, and novitiate study before taking final vows. Every six years, the congregation gathers in Rome for a General Chapter, the highest governing body, where they elect leadership and set strategic goals. Pope Pius XI once famously praised their willingness to undertake the Church's most challenging assignments, cementing their reputation as specialists in difficult missions.

The order's history is deeply intertwined with the Indigenous peoples of Canada, where they historically administered at least 57 schools within the Indian residential school system. This involvement is a source of profound controversy, as several of these institutions have been linked to instances of abuse by Oblate staff and clergy. In recent decades, the congregation has shifted its focus toward dialogue, human dignity, and the pursuit of social justice, attempting to reconcile its past actions with its ongoing mission to serve the most vulnerable populations across the globe.
