Moratuwa: A Sri Lankan coastal hub defined by music, furniture, and water
In short: Located 18 kilometers south of Colombo, Moratuwa is a unique municipality nearly surrounded by water. Known for its thriving furniture industry and deep-rooted musical heritage, this suburb boasts a distinct cultural identity, featuring a high Christian population and a landscape shaped by centuries of history, trade, and sport.
The name Moratuwa is believed to originate from the Sinhalese term for a sentry turret, Mura Atuwa, which once stood at Kaldamulla. The city’s geography is dominated by its proximity to the Indian Ocean, the Moratu River, and Lake Bolgoda—the largest natural lake in Sri Lanka. This water-bound setting has historically facilitated trade and fishing, while the modern town serves as a significant industrial center, particularly renowned for its wood handicrafts and furniture production.
Culturally, Moratuwa stands out for its high concentration of Christian residents, a demographic characteristic that distinguishes it from much of the country. This religious heritage is reflected in its architecture, including the neogothic Holy Emmanuel Church, which was constructed between 1857 and 1860 and once held the title of the tallest structure in the nation. The area’s history is further documented in 15th-century texts like the Kokila Sandesha, which celebrated the region during the reign of King Parakramabahu VI.
Beyond its industry and architecture, the town is a powerhouse for Sri Lankan arts and sports. It has produced a long list of celebrated musicians and cricket players, with the De Soysa Stadium serving as a local landmark for the sport. The community’s pride is often expressed through music, including local anthems that honor the town’s character. Today, the suburb remains well-connected via the coastal railway and the Galle Road, maintaining its status as a vibrant, multifaceted hub within the Colombo district.
