In short: Since their first match on independence day in 1975, the Mozambican national team has faced a challenging journey. While they have never reached a FIFA World Cup, they have secured six appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, recently reaching the knockout stages for the very first time in 2025.

The Mozambique national football team, controlled by the Mozambican Football Federation, has experienced significant highs and lows since their debut in 1975. Their first international match was a 2–1 victory against Zambia on the day the country gained independence. Following this, they faced Cuba in 1977, marking their first non-African opponent. In 1997, the national football federation became a founding member of COSAFA. Their inaugural match was a friendly victory against Zambia.

The team's history in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is defined by periods of qualification followed by long absences. After qualifying for their first tournament in 1986, they experienced a 10-year gap before returning in 1996. This was followed by another 12-year wait before qualifying for the 2010 tournament in Angola, where they secured third place in their group despite being eliminated. During the 2010 qualifying campaign, they managed to secure a third-place finish in their group. This achievement allowed them to participate in the tournament held in Angola.

Recent years have seen a resurgence for the squad. After a long hiatus, they qualified for the 2023 AFCON, where they recorded draws against Egypt and Ghana. This momentum carried them into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, marking their sixth appearance at the tournament and their first time advancing to the knockout stage. Under the leadership of head coach Chiquinho Conde, who took charge in July 2019, the team continues to build its presence in African football. The squad's home matches are played at Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo, which has a capacity of 42,000. Chiquinho Conde currently serves as the team's head coach.
