How the 53rd leader of the Dawoodi Bohras is reshaping a global community
In short: As the 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq, Mufaddal Saifuddin guides the Dawoodi Bohra community through a blend of ancient Fatimid tradition and modern urban development. From restoring medieval mosques to overseeing massive infrastructure projects in Mumbai, his leadership integrates spiritual guidance with a practical, global vision for education, welfare, and economic stability.
Born in Surat in 1946, Mufaddal Saifuddin was designated as the successor to his father, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, through a formal spiritual process known as nass. After years of scholarly training in Mumbai and Cairo, he assumed leadership in 2014. His tenure is marked by a unique administrative style, notably his decision to appoint a large number of deputies from his close family circle, a move intended to foster communal bonds and ensure continuity within the community's leadership structure.
Saifuddin’s influence extends far beyond religious instruction. He has become a prominent figure in urban and architectural restoration, overseeing the ambitious Bhendi Bazaar Redevelopment Project in Mumbai. This initiative aims to replace 250 dilapidated buildings with 17 modern towers, providing improved infrastructure for over 3,000 families and 1,250 businesses. Simultaneously, he has expanded the community’s educational reach through the Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah academy, which now operates four campuses, including new facilities in Nairobi and Mumbai, with a fifth planned for Sidhpur.
His approach to community welfare is deeply rooted in ethical and interest-free economic models. Through the Qardhan Hasana program, he facilitates interest-free loans for education and business, while actively discouraging speculative financial practices. His initiatives also address contemporary social challenges, ranging from the promotion of digital literacy in Quranic studies to the implementation of health campaigns that discourage tobacco and vaping. By balancing these diverse responsibilities, Saifuddin maintains a role that bridges the gap between traditional Fatimid Islamic teachings and the practical demands of the 21st century.
The scope of his work is recognized globally, evidenced by state honors from Kenya, Egypt, and Pakistan. Whether he is inaugurating a new university building or consulting on legislative matters like the Waqf Amendment Act in India, Saifuddin remains a central figure in the lives of Dawoodi Bohras, emphasizing a life defined by spiritual reflection, service, and social responsibility.
