In short: While many religious traditions rely on fixed historical texts, the Nizari Ismaili Imamat follows a living lineage. This institution holds the unique authority to interpret sacred law according to the needs of the modern era, ensuring that ancient faith remains relevant in a globalized society.

The Nizari Ismaili Imamat is a continuous, hereditary institution of leadership that traces its origins back 1,400 years to the Prophet Muhammad’s designation of his cousin and son-in-law, Ali, at Ghadir Khumm. In this doctrine, the Imam is not merely a political leader but a spiritual intermediary—a 'Prime Teacher' and a living manifestation of the divine word. This lineage, passing through the descendants of Ali and his son Hussein, maintains an uninterrupted chain of authority intended to exist until the end of time.

A defining feature of the Nizari doctrine is the authority of the living Imam to interpret the Quran (ta’wil) and adapt the application of Sharia (Islamic law) to contemporary circumstances. This has historically led to significant shifts in practice. For instance, the recent Imams, Aga Khan III and Aga Khan IV, transitioned the obligation of daily prayers from five times a day to three, and moved away from the practice of purdah (veiling) in favor of dressing according to the common decency of one's residence. These adaptations are intended to ease religious pressures in the modern world and emphasize a cosmopolitan ethic of pluralism.

The relationship between the Imam and his followers is defined by a mutual covenant of rights and responsibilities. While the community provides the zakat (tithe) and devotion, the Imam is responsible for the spiritual guidance and physical well-being of the Ummah. This institution also functions as a global welfare network, evidenced by the Aga Khan Development Network and recent international milestones, such as the 2015 agreement with Portugal to establish the 'Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat' in Lisbon.
