In short: From being held for ransom in Kuwait to a cinematic hijacking off the coast of Somalia, the MV Tygra has lived a life of extraordinary maritime drama. This vessel's history reveals the intense, often violent struggle to secure global shipping lanes against piracy and deception.

Originally launched in 1998 as the Alva Maersk, this vessel—now known as the MV Tygra—has a history marked by both criminal deception and physical combat. In 2004, the ship was detained in Kuwait following a massive fraud scheme. Kuwait-based expatriates allegedly used fraudulent, high-value bills of lading to trick the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, effectively using the ship as collateral. To secure the vessel's release in April 2004, the company was forced to provide $1.86 million in collateral.

The ship's most famous chapter occurred in April 2009, when it was hijacked by Somali pirates 240 nautical miles southeast of Eyl. While the crew managed to sink the pirates' speedboat by swinging the rudder, the pirates successfully took Captain Richard Phillips hostage in a lifeboat. The standoff ended on April 12, 2009, when U.S. Navy marksmen from the USS Bainbridge killed three pirates during a high-stakes rescue operation authorized by President Barack Obama.

The vessel's struggles did not end with the 2009 crisis. Between 2009 and 2011, the ship faced at least four additional unsuccessful hijacking attempts. In 2014, the ship's history took a darker, more internal turn when two security contractors, former Navy SEALs, were found dead in the Seychelles. While investigators initially suspected drug use due to traces of heroin, the official cause of death was determined to be respiratory failure following the consumption of alcohol and heroin.
