In short: Once a fragment of the Dhaka Division, Mymensingh has transformed into a distinct administrative entity. From its ancient roots in the Vedic Mahajanapada to its modern industrial significance, discover how this region carved out its own identity through centuries of shifting borders.

The Mymensingh Division is one of the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh, covering an area of 10,485 square kilometres. While its current borders were finalized in 2015, the region's history is much deeper. Around the 4th century BC, the area was a significant component of the Vedic state known as Mahajanapada. Over the subsequent millennia, the landscape was shaped by the influence of the Gupta Empire, the Sena Dynasty, and various Muslim rulers during the medieval period.

The modern administrative structure began to take shape under the British Indian government, which established the Mymensingh district in 1787. This larger 'Greater Mymensingh' region was eventually reorganized into six districts: Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Sherpur, and Tangail. However, the creation of the modern division was marked by local preference. When Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared the establishment of the division on 12 January 2015, the plan was to include six districts. Yet, residents of Tangail and Kishoreganj preferred to remain within the Dhaka Division. Consequently, on 14 September 2015, the division was officially announced with only four districts: Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Netrokona, and Sherpur.

Today, the division is a vital economic driver, characterized by a thriving agricultural sector and a global textile presence. Large-scale cultivation of rice, jute, wheat, and vegetables defines the landscape, with rice production contributing significantly to the national economy. Beyond the fields, the division hosts a widespread textile industry, with factories producing goods for international export. As of the 2022 census, the division is home to 12,225,498 people, maintaining the highest percentage of Muslims of any division in Bangladesh at 95.57%.
