In short: Nanterre is known today as a bustling business hub and home to the iconic La Defense district. Yet, recent archaeological excavations suggest this suburb may hold a deeper secret: it could be the true, pre-Roman site of Lutetia, challenging long-held assumptions about the origins of the French capital.

Located 11 kilometers northwest of central Paris, Nanterre serves as the prefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department. While it is recognized for hosting the Paris West University Nanterre La Défense and the headquarters of major corporations like Société Générale, its historical identity is currently being rewritten. Archaeological work conducted between 1994 and 2005 uncovered a massive Gallic necropolis dating to the third century BC, alongside over 15 hectares of ancient construction near the Seine.

These findings have sparked intense academic debate regarding the location of the pre-Roman Parisii capital. Traditionally, historians pointed toward the Île de la Cité, but Caesar’s own accounts of Lutetia describe a river environment with two channels surrounding an island—a geography that matches the river near Nanterre. If these archaeological indicators are correct, Nanterre may have been the primary settlement closest to the modern center of Paris before the Roman conquest.

Beyond its ancient mysteries, Nanterre remains a site of significant modern history. It is the birthplace of Sainte Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, and has been the stage for both high-profile legal battles and tragic events, such as the 2002 town hall massacre and the 2023 unrest following the death of Nahel Merzouk. Today, the city balances this complex past with its role as a modern powerhouse, anchored by the massive Paris La Défense Arena, which opened in 2017 and has since hosted major international events.
