In short: Narnia is a world of talking animals and magic, but its origins are rooted in the real-world scenery of Ulster. From the Mourne Mountains to the cliffs of County Antrim, C.S. Lewis drew from the landscapes of his native Ireland to build his iconic fantasy setting.

While Narnia is a portal fantasy where children enter a magical realm from Earth, the geography of the land was heavily influenced by Lewis's native Ireland. He specifically noted that the landscapes of Ulster, particularly the Mourne Mountains, evoked a sense of wonder, making him feel a giant might appear over a ridge at any moment. He even described the view from Rostrevor overlooking Carlingford Lough as his personal vision of Narnia.

The visual details of the series also draw from the northern Irish seaside. During his youth, Lewis frequently visited the coast near Portrush in County Antrim. The dramatic cliffs and the ruined medieval towers of Dunluce Castle are widely speculated to have served as the inspiration for the majestic castle of Cair Paravel, the seat of the Narnian government.

The name 'Narnia' itself has a more mundane origin. Lewis reportedly chose it because he liked the sound of the word, which he discovered in a 1904 edition of Murray's Small Classical Atlas. The name refers to a small medieval town in Umbria, Italy, located halfway between Rome and Assisi. This real-world town, which was already ancient when defeated by Romans in 299 BC, sits atop an olive-covered hill and features a Romanesque cathedral.

Narnia operates on a unique temporal scale compared to Earth. The entire Narnian timeline, spanning from its creation to its end (c. 1–2555), runs parallel to approximately 49 Earth-years (c. 1900–1949). This creates a significant time dilation, where a single year on Earth equates to an average of 52.14 years in the Narnian world.
