Greta Gerwig is bringing the origins of Narnia to the big screen
In short: A new cinematic era for C.S. Lewis’s beloved world is approaching. Directed by Greta Gerwig, this ambitious Netflix production promises a high-fantasy reboot, reimagining the very moment the great lion Aslan breathed life into a new universe.
The upcoming film, titled Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, serves as a narrative successor to the Walden Media trilogy, though producers have labeled this project a complete reboot. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the production features an expansive ensemble cast. Meryl Streep is set to voice Aslan, the creator of Narnia, while Emma Mackey will portray Jadis, the character who eventually becomes the White Witch and the final ruler of Charn. The cast also includes Daniel Craig as Andrew Ketterley, Carey Mulligan as Flora Kirke, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith as Frank, the London cabby destined to be Narnia's first king.
Production for the film was a massive undertaking, with principal photography beginning on August 11, 2025. The crew utilized various locations across the United Kingdom, including London landmarks like Bank Station and The Royal Exchange, as well as the Castlefield area of Manchester. Much of the studio work took place at Shepperton Studios and Longcross Studios. Despite a six-week delay caused by a cast member's injury, filming wrapped on January 31, 2026. The film's musical score is being co-composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously collaborated with Gerwig on the Barbie soundtrack.
The release strategy marks a significant moment for Netflix, as the film will be the streaming giant's first wide theatrical release. Scheduled for a worldwide theatrical debut on February 12, 2027 (excluding France), it will later arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027. While Sony Pictures will handle international distribution, the deal excludes territories such as China, Belarus, and Russia. This release pattern follows a new model where Netflix will hold films in theaters for a minimum of 45 days before moving them to the streaming platform.
