The Indian institute ending the diagnostic odyssey for rare neurological disorders
In short: For many patients with mitochondrial disorders, finding a diagnosis is a years-long journey of uncertainty. NIMHANS in Bangalore is changing this by combining high-level clinical care with advanced genetic sequencing to identify population-specific variations and provide customized treatment plans.
The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) serves as India's apex center for neuroscience research and mental health education. While it is a government-funded multi-disciplinary institute, its role extends beyond general psychiatry; it is a hub for identifying complex neuromuscular disorders. The institute handles approximately 800 to 900 patients with neuromuscular disorders (NMD) annually, specifically catering to those from Karnataka, South India, and neighboring countries.
A key driver of this work is the department of Neuropathology, which is currently the only department in the country offering full-time experienced neuropathologists for muscle and peripheral nerve disorders. This infrastructure supports advanced diagnostic services, including ultrastructural studies and electrophysiology. Within its Neurobiology Research Centre, NIMHANS operates 18 state-of-the-art labs, including a 'myo-bank' and facilities for sequencing respiratory chain complex assays and cell culture work.
The institute is pioneering research into mitochondrial DNA variants and inherited neuropathies. Researchers there have been among the first in India to identify novel mitochondrial DNA variants and explore nuclear-mitochondrial intergenomic communication disorders. By establishing genetic diagnoses, NIMHANS aims to end 'diagnostic odysseys' for patients, replacing uncertainty with customized care and creating a sustainable cadre of scholars trained in these frontier sciences.
The institute's history reflects a long evolution in Indian medicine, originating from the 1847 Bangalore Lunatic Asylum. It was eventually established as an autonomous body on December 27, 1974. Today, it operates across five campuses in Bengaluru, covering 174 acres of urban land to balance its three core priorities: patient service, manpower development, and research.
