How a Juilliard graduate overcame dyslexia to redefine television character studies
In short: Before becoming a breakout star on HBO's True Blood, Nelsan Ellis navigated a childhood as a ward of the state. From a diagnosis of dyslexia in second grade to winning prestigious awards, his journey from Alabama to the heights of dramatic acting is a testament to profound resilience.
Nelsan Ellis, born on March 31, 1978, in Harvey, Illinois, experienced a turbulent upbringing. Following her brother's passing, Jackie Ellis experienced a breakdown, leaving Ellis and his siblings as state wards. They were eventually raised by their maternal grandmother in Bessemer, Alabama, where Ellis was diagnosed with dyslexia during the second grade.
His path to professional acting was marked by rigorous training and significant personal milestones. After joining the United States Marine Corps at age 17, he attended Illinois State University before being accepted into the Juilliard School in 2000. At Juilliard, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004 and wrote the semi-autobiographical play 'Ugly,' which won the Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award. This play was deeply influenced by the murder of his pregnant sister.
The HBO series True Blood (2008–2014) brought Ellis broad critical praise for his role as Lafayette Reynolds. To inhabit the role, he drew on the mannerisms of his mother and sister, often using heavy makeup and music to enter character. His performance earned him a Satellite Award in 2008 and an NAACP Image Award in 2011. Beyond television, he appeared in films such as Secretariat (2010) and The Butler (2013), where he played Martin Luther King Jr.
Tragically, Ellis passed away at the age of 39 on July 8, 2017, at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He passed away due to severe complications arising from alcohol withdrawal syndrome during a self-managed detox. His survivors include his son, Breon Ellis, and a daughter born recently.
