In short: Before he was portraying legendary figures like Jesus Christ or the antagonist Adar, Joseph Mawle was a student overcoming severe dyslexia and a sudden, debilitating hearing impairment. His journey from a nine-generation farming family to international television stardom is a masterclass in professional resilience.

Born in Oxford in 1974, Joseph Daniel Turner Mawle grew up in a Victorian manor house on a Warwickshire farm. His roots in the region run deep; he comes from a family with a nine-generation history of farming the land. However, his path to the stage was far from linear. During his time at the Croft prep school near Stratford-upon-avon, Mawle was diagnosed with severe dyslexia, leading him to attend a special needs boarding school between the ages of 13 and 16.

The transition to acting was met with further physical challenges. After leaving school at 16, Mawle contracted labyrinthitis, a condition that left him with tinnitus and a 70 per cent hearing impairment in the upper register. Undeterred, he worked various jobs, including as a dishwasher and fitness instructor, to support his studies in performing arts at a local college. This tenacity eventually earned him a scholarship to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, from which he graduated in 2002.

Mawle's career is marked by a remarkable versatility in high-profile roles. He gained significant recognition in the television film Soundproof (2006), where he played a deaf lead, a role that earned him an RTS Breakthrough on Screen nomination. His notable roles comprise Benjen Stark throughout Game of Thrones (2011–2017), the primary villain Adar during The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's (2022) debut season, and Jesus Christ within The Passion (2008). While his time as Adar concluded in 2022, his presence in modern prestige television remains a defining feature of his legacy.
