In short: In 1968, a priest bought a steam engine for just £3,000 to prevent it from being scrapped. What began as a plan for a static monument evolved into the Nene Valley Railway, a unique heritage line where international locomotives roam the English countryside.

The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) traces its origins to a movement led by the Reverend Richard Paten. Paten acquired the £3,000 scrap-value BR Standard Class 5 engine, 73050, during 1968. While his initial intent was to display the engine as a monument to Peterborough's railway history, local opposition to a 'stuffed' engine led to a decision to restore it to working order. This momentum helped form the Peterborough Railway Society, which formally launched the N/V/R concept in 1971.

The railway's development was marked by a surprising pivot in engineering strategy. Initially, the society intended to operate using British locomotives and stock. However, because most serviceable ex-BR engines had already been acquired by other preservationists, the NVR faced a shortage of suitable motive power. A feasibility study in 1974 revealed that the line could accommodate a larger 'continental loading gauge' by making minor adjustments, such as reducing platform widths and demolishing only one bridge. This allowed the use of foreign engines, including the French 4-6-0 'Nord 3.628' and Swedish tank engines.

Today, the 7.5-mile line runs between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction. The railway's history is a tapestry of reconstruction and preservation, evidenced by the relocation of the 1869 Wansford Road Station and the rebuilding of the Orton Mere signal box after an arson attack in 2023. The line even holds a unique place in pop culture: it was the first railway to host a full-scale replica of Thomas the Tank Engine, a model officially named by the character's creator, the Rev. W. Awdry, in 1971.
