How Canada's Nepean electoral district evolved through decades of shifting urban and rural boundaries
In short: Nepean is a federal electoral district in Ontario that has undergone significant boundary changes since its initial creation in 1987. Represented today by the leader of the Liberal Party, the riding reflects the complex, ongoing process of redistributing Canadian parliamentary seats to account for shifting urban and rural populations.
The electoral district of Nepean has a history defined by repeated reorganization. Originally established in 1987, the riding was carved out of the Nepean—Carleton district and comprised the City of Nepean. This iteration lasted until 1996, when the district was dissolved. Its territory was then split, with 54 percent absorbed by Nepean—Carleton and 46 percent integrated into Ottawa West—Nepean.
Elections Canada reinstated the riding in 2012, with the new boundaries taking effect during the 2015 federal election held on October 19. This version was primarily formed from the more urban western sections of the former Nepean—Carleton district. Further adjustments occurred following the 2022 Federal Redistribution, which aimed to simplify the riding's shape. Rural areas south of Bells Corners and west of Highway 416 were moved to the Carleton riding, while urban parts of Bells Corners were transferred to the Kanata district. Simultaneously, the riding expanded north by acquiring territory from Ottawa West—Nepean, establishing a new boundary along the railway line.
These latest adjustments were implemented for the 2025 federal election. The current geography of the riding is defined by a specific path starting at the intersection of Richmond Road and Highway 417, winding through various roads and landmarks like the Rideau River and the Canadian National Railway. This constant recalibration of electoral maps is a standard feature of Canadian democracy, ensuring that representation remains aligned with the evolving demographics of the region, which currently includes a diverse population with various cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds.
