In short: The Nemzeti Bajnokság I, or NB I, has defined Hungarian football since 1901. Once dominated by a fierce rivalry between Budapest giants Ferencváros and MTK, the league has seen dramatic shifts, including the rise of rural powerhouses and the impact of geopolitical changes on the nation's most prestigious sporting competition.

The Nemzeti Bajnokság I began in 1901 with five clubs, including Budapesti TC, which secured the first two titles. For decades, the league was defined by a duopoly between Ferencváros and MTK Budapest. MTK set a record of nine consecutive championships early in the century, while Ferencváros famously won every game of the 1932 season. This intense competition, often called the Budapest derby, expanded in the 1930s when Újpest broke the two-club dominance.

Geopolitical shifts significantly altered the league's landscape. During World War II, the inclusion of clubs from expanded territories, such as Nagyvárad, introduced teams from outside modern-day Hungary. Later, the 1950s saw the emergence of Honvéd, whose players formed the core of the legendary Mighty Magyars. However, the collapse of communism in the 1990s brought severe financial instability, compounded by the Bosman ruling, which restricted Eastern Bloc clubs from competing with wealthier European counterparts.

The 21st century marked a shift toward rural dominance. Debreceni VSC, which spent over 50 years in the second division, became the first non-Budapest dynasty by winning five titles between 2005 and 2010. Other provincial clubs like Zalaegerszeg, Győr, and Videoton also claimed historic first titles. Despite this, Ferencváros reasserted its historical status, winning six successive titles ending in 2025. By 2026, the league landscape shifted again as ETO FC secured its fifth national title.

Today, the league features 12 teams competing in a unique format where they play each other three times. The structure remains a critical pathway for European competition, with the champion entering UEFA Champions League qualifiers. While the league has changed names—including a brief stint as the Fizz Liga in 2025 before returning to the OTP Bank Liga—it remains the highest level of Hungarian football.
