The collegiate record-breaker who redefined Northwestern basketball history
In short: Nia Brodie didn't just play for Northwestern; she rewrote the university's entire basketball blueprint. From becoming the first freshman to earn first-team all-Big Ten honors to shattering multiple career records, her trajectory from a high school standout to a WNBA mainstay is a masterclass in consistent athletic evolution.
Brodie's ascent began at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where she earned McDonald's All-American status. This foundation led her to Northwestern, where she made an immediate impact. During her initial college game on 5 November 2013, she tallied 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, plus 2 blocks. By the end of that freshman season, she became the first player in school history to be named a first-team all-Big Ten selection as a freshman.
Her collegiate tenure was defined by record-breaking consistency. During her junior season, she set the Wildcats' record for most rebounds in a single season with 344. Records for career field goal attempts, free throw attempts, free throws made, total rebounds, and scoring in double figures for consecutive games were surpassed by her during her final year.
She was the first player in Northwestern history to earn All Big Ten First Team (Coaches) honors in all four years of eligibility, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding for her entire four-year career. Brodie's professional path has been a nomadic journey across the WNBA and international leagues. Drafted 5th overall in 2017 by the San Antonio Stars, she has since played for the Atlanta Dream, Phoenix Mercury, Los Angeles Sparks, and the Minnesota Lynx. Her international resume is equally diverse, featuring stints in Israel, Australia, Poland, Turkey, and Belgium. This global experience complements her domestic success, which includes a notable 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championship performance where she set a Team USA record by making 11 consecutive free throws without a miss.
