The history of NIU football is a pendulum of extreme highs and lows. In the early 20th century, the program experienced significant instability, including a winless season in 1928. However, the arrival of coach Chick Evans in 1929 fundamentally altered the program's trajectory. Evans transformed a struggling squad into a winning machine, leading the Huskies to multiple championships between 1938 and 1946 and establishing a culture of sustained success.
The program's modern era is defined by periods of intense dominance punctuated by sudden transitions. Under Joe Novak, who coached from 1996 to 2007, the Huskies experienced both a legendary 1998 victory over Central Michigan—which prompted students to plant goalposts in a campus lagoon—and a climb to No. 10 in the national rankings in 2003. This era also saw the emergence of legendary talents like Jordan Lynch, whose 2012 season featured a record-breaking 1,751 rushing yards, the most by any FBS quarterback at that time.
Perhaps the most remarkable chapter occurred in 2024. Entering a matchup against No. 5 Notre Dame, the Huskies were heavy underdogs. In a historic upset, NIU secured a 16–14 victory, marking the largest upset in school history and the first time a MAC program has ever defeated a top-5 opponent. While the program continues to navigate conference shifts, including a move to the Mountain West in 2026, its reputation for disrupting the established hierarchy remains intact.
