In short: Designed in just 102 days, the North American P-51 Mustang was initially dismissed as a secondary tactical scout. Yet, by pairing a British-designed engine with an innovative airframe, it became the definitive long-range escort that secured Allied air superiority and finally made daylight bombing raids over Germany viable.

In 1940, the British Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation (NAA) to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license. Instead, NAA president James H. Kindelberger proposed a new, more modern design. Led by engineer Edgar Schmued, the team developed the NA-73X prototype in a remarkably short 102-day period. The aircraft featured a laminar flow wing and a unique cooling system that utilized the Meredith effect, where heated air exiting the radiator provided a slight amount of jet thrust.

The Mustang’s true potential was unlocked by the integration of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. While the initial Allison engine performed well at low altitudes, it lacked the power for high-altitude combat. Following suggestions from Rolls-Royce test pilot Ronald Harker, the airframe was adapted to house the two-stage supercharged Merlin. This transformation, culminating in the P-51B and P-51D models, allowed the fighter to escort bombers deep into German territory, a feat previously considered an engineering impossibility.

By 1944, the Mustang had become the backbone of the USAAF's Eighth Air Force. Under Major General James Doolittle, fighters were freed from close-formation escort duties to conduct aggressive sweeps, intercepting the Luftwaffe far from the bomber streams. This tactical shift, combined with the Mustang's superior performance at altitude, decimated German fighter defenses. The aircraft remained a versatile asset throughout the Korean War and continued in service with various air forces until the early 1980s, long after the jet age had begun.
