The Twin Mustang was a clean-sheet design, not two P-51s bolted together
In short: With its distinctive dual-fuselage configuration, the North American F-82 Twin Mustang is often mistaken for a simple modification of the P-51. In reality, it was a specialized long-range escort fighter built from the ground up to protect B-29 bombers, featuring only 20 percent component commonality with its famous predecessor.
Conceived in 1943 to address the limitations of existing fighters, the F-82 was designed to escort Boeing B-29 Superfortresses on missions exceeding 2,000 miles. The unconventional twin-fuselage layout was chosen to allow one pilot to rest during these grueling long-range flights. Despite the name, the aircraft was a clean-sheet design led by Edgar Schmued at North American Aviation, intended to signify increased range and payload capacity rather than a direct lineage from the P-51 Mustang.
The aircraft’s operational history was brief but significant. It performed escort and night fighter roles and achieved the first U.S. air-to-air victory of the Korean War. However, the rapid emergence of jet-powered adversaries like the MiG-15 quickly rendered the piston-engined F-82 obsolete. By the early 1950s, it was being replaced by jet fighters such as the Lockheed F-94 Starfire, and the strategic escort role itself was eventually phased out by 1957.
Beyond its combat service, one XF-82 prototype (tail number 44-83887) played a crucial role in NACA research. Between 1948 and 1953, it served as a launch platform for ramjet-powered missiles over the Atlantic, helping scientists study engine performance in transonic and supersonic realms before wind tunnels could handle such speeds. After a 1949 runway accident, the aircraft was scrapped, sold, and eventually salvaged. Following a decade-long restoration involving 207,000 hours of labor, the XF-82 returned to the skies in 2019, serving as a rare testament to a unique era of aviation engineering.
