In short: Located south of Omaha, Offutt Air Force Base has spent over a century at the center of American military strategy. From its origins as a balloon field to its role as the headquarters for the Strategic Air Command, the base has been the silent guardian of the nation's nuclear deterrent.

Established as Fort Crook in 1890, the site was initially a dispatch point for conflicts on the Great Plains. By 1918, it transitioned into an aviation hub, eventually being renamed in 1924 for 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt, a local pilot who died during a training flight in France. The base's industrial significance peaked during World War II when the Glenn L. Martin Company operated a massive bomber plant on-site. This facility produced 531 B-29 Superfortresses, including the Enola Gay and Bockscar, the aircraft that delivered the atomic weapons used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

During the Cold War, Offutt became the nerve center for the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Its central location was chosen by Secretary of the Air Force Stuart Symington to keep the nation's long-range atomic strike force safely beyond the reach of hostile missiles. The base’s operational intensity was immense; from 1961 to 1990, Operation Looking Glass maintained an airborne command post 24 hours a day to ensure continuity of command in the event of nuclear war. The base also hosted Nike-Hercules surface-to-air missile sites in the 1960s to provide local defense.

The base's role in crisis management continued into the 21st century. On September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush utilized an underground command bunker at Offutt to conduct a critical strategy session with his national security team. Despite its strategic importance, the base has faced modern challenges, including significant flooding from the Missouri River in 2019 that submerged nearly half of its runway. Today, as the headquarters for the U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt remains a vital component of the nation's defense infrastructure, continuing a legacy that spans from the early days of military aviation to the complexities of modern global security.
