The Sunshine State: Nigeria's coastal hub of hills, cocoa, and ancient kingdoms
In short: Ondo State, carved from the former Western State in 1976, is a diverse Nigerian region defined by its Atlantic coastline and the towering Idanre hills. Known as the Sunshine State, it balances a rich Yoruba heritage with a modern economy driven by cocoa, asphalt mining, and extensive maritime activity.
Located in southwestern Nigeria, Ondo State spans a landscape that transitions from mangrove-swamp forests near the Bight of Benin to the rugged, elevated terrain of the Idanre inselberg hills. These hills reach over 1,000 metres in height, marking the most significant geographical peak in the western portion of the country. The state is home to eighteen local government areas, with a population that is predominantly Yoruba, though Ijaw communities, including the Apoi and Arogbo, inhabit the southeastern swamps bordering Edo State.
The state's economy is multifaceted, relying on agricultural exports like cocoa, alongside mineral extraction such as asphalt. Governance is structured around a democratically elected governor and a House of Assembly, with a specific electoral process that requires candidates to secure a plurality of votes and a 25% threshold across at least two-thirds of the local government areas. As of 2024, Lucky Aiyedatiwa serves as governor, having assumed office in December 2023 following the death of his predecessor, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu.
Culturally and socially, Ondo State is a center for education and faith. It hosts several prominent institutions, including the Federal University of Technology Akure and the Adekunle Ajasin University. While the majority of the population identifies as Christian, the region also maintains a presence of Islamic and traditional Yoruba animist practices. The state's infrastructure is supported by a network of major roads, including segments of the Trans-African Highway, which facilitate connections to neighboring states like Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti, cementing its role as a vital transit and economic corridor in the region.
