In short: In 1939, a mob burned down a home in Fort Worth, Texas, on the 19th day of June. For Opal Lee, this act of violence became the catalyst for a lifelong crusade. She spent decades walking across the country to ensure that day would eventually be remembered as a federal holiday.

Born in 1926, Opal Lee witnessed the destruction of her family's home by 500 white rioters in 1939. This specific date—June 19—spurred her to advocate for Juneteenth as more than just a festival, but as a recognition of history. To commemorate the 2.5-year period required for the Emancipation Proclamation's news to arrive in Texas, she initiated annual 2.5-mile treks. Lee's activism was rooted in community building and education. A retired teacher and counselor, she founded the Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society and established her nonprofit, Unity Unlimited Inc., in 1994.

Her methods were both symbolic and practical: she organized bus tours for city leaders to visit economically depressed areas and campaigned for federal recognition through a Change.org petition that gathered 1.6 million signatures. Her persistence culminated in 2021 when, at age 94, President Joe Biden signed Senate Bill S. 475 into law, making Juneteenth the eleventh federal holiday. Lee was present at the signing ceremony, where she received a standing ovation. The nation's premier civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, was granted to her in 2024, coinciding with her relocation to a restored 1939 residence.

Lee's work also involves reclaiming spaces of historical trauma. She is a founding board member of a coalition working to transform a former Ku Klux Klan auditorium into a museum for arts and community healing, honoring Fred Rouse, a Black man lynched by a Fort Worth mob in 1921.
